Follow basic rules while burning candles. It helps enhance your experience by maximizing candle burn times and ensuring your safety in the process.

Increasing your candle life

  • Place burning candles at least three inches apart from one another. This is to make sure they don't melt one another, or create their own drafts that will cause the candles to burn improperly.
  • The first time you light a pillar candle, burn it one hour for every inch of its diameter. This will allow the pool of wax to extend to the outside rim and prevent your candle from forming a "canyon" in its center. Burning your candle this way will also set its memory. Each time you re-light the candle it will "remember" to burn out to the rim.
  • Keep your wicks trimmed!! This essential for a clean, smoke free burn. Many people complain about candles that smoke and this can be eliminated by trimming the wicks to 1/4 inch every time you burn the candle. This is true for all types of candles.
  • If your candle is smoking despite trimming the wick and checking for debris in the melt pool, extinguish the candle immediately. Trim the wick again a little more and allow to cool before relighting. The smoking will stop. With a quality candle, you shouldn't have problems with smoking, but it is worth remembering that scented candles will smoke more than unscented candles.
  • Extinguish a pillar candle if the wax pool approaches the outer edge. When pillar candles have begun to melt down while the wax is warm you will want to cup the wax inward. This will allow your candles to breath and allow you to burn more of the candle
the wick goes off center, simply center it with the tip of a spoon
  • When you burn a highly scented candle, sometimes "mushrooming" will occur on the wick. Treat this as a friendly reminder that you need to trim the wick.
  • Candles need to breathe. If you burn a candle in a small room, it is likely to smoke. Please consider the size of your room when you display your new candles.
  • Never "blow out" a candle. Blowing will spray the wax everywhere and cause the candle to drip and smoke. The most effective way to extinguish the flame of a candle is to use a candle snuffer. If you don't own a snuffer, the best way to extinguish the candle is to place your forefinger in front of the flame before you blow. This clever trick means that the air will hit the flame from the sides instead of hitting it directly.
  • If candle burns unevenly due to a draft, carefully push the wick to the higher side.. If this causes dripping, extinguish, cool and relight. Repeat a few times and the candle will repair itself.

Candle Maintenance

  • Always store your candles in a cool, dark and dry place. Tapers or dinner candles should be stored flat to preventing warping.
  • You can remove dust and fingerprints from a candle by gently rubbing the surface with a piece of nylon or a soft cloth. The cloth can be dry or slightly dampened with water. If your candles are looking dull and lifeless take an old nylon stocking and gently buff the wax to return its shine and gloss
  • Wax drippings can be removed from most candleholders by running hot water over them. Some home care experts prefer removing wax by first placing the candleholder in the freezer for an hour or so. This allows the wax to shrink and easily pop out when the candleholder is removed from the freezer.
  • Never use a knife or a sharp object to remove wax drippings from a glass votive holder. It might scratch or weaken the glass, causing it to break upon subsequent use.
  • Avoid burning candles in any glass item not specifically designed for candles. Glass candleholders are specifically manufactured to withstand the temperature changes that occur when burning a candle. Everyday glassware is not designed for burning candles.
  • Votive holders will clean more easily afterward if you add a few drops of water to the glass before inserting the candle. Caution: Don’t add more than a few drops of water and don’t add water unless you intend to burn the candle immediately afterward. Over time, a candle wick could absorb the water and won’t burn properly.
  • Avoid placing your candles where they will be directly exposed to sunlight or harsh indoor lighting, such as a spotlight. Candles may fade if they are left in bright light for an extended period of time.

Tips for burning container candles

  • Trim wick to 1/4" before 1st lighting. Although the wicks are designed to be self-trimming they may require extra trimming depending on the burn time
  • Burn jars at least 2-3 hours to keep the melt pool even
  • Keep out of drafts and away from children and pets
  • Discontinue use when 1/2 " of wax remains
  • To clean, wash out with hot soapy water or place container or holder in the freezer for a couple of minutes, the wax should pop out easily.
